Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Bang Kwang Central Prison (Thai: ) is a men’s prison in Nonthaburi Province, Thailand, located at the Chao Phraya River about 7 miles north of Bangkok. The prison houses many foreign prisoners. It is a harsh prison which handles death row and long-sentence prisoners. All prisoners are required to wear leg irons for the first three months of their sentences. Death row inmates have their leg irons permanently welded on. In the book The Damage Done former prisoner Warren Fellows recounts that the prison was nicknamed “Big Tiger” by the Thais because it “prowled and ate”. Paul Hayward served part of his sentence here. Prisoners receive one bowl of rice* in vegetable soup each day. Other food must be purchased from the prison canteen. The prison works on a chit system. Each prisoner has an account with the canteen. Poor prisoners do chores for wealthier prisoners and prison guards to earn money for food. Some British and Lebanese prisoners receive extra money per month from charities. The British Embassy also provides food and vitamins for their prisoners. Prisoners are provided with cooking facilities and gas for the stoves is provided by the prison. The prison is featured in the popular simulation game Mafia Wars: Bangkok, as one of the jobs under the Criminal tier (Pay Off The Guards At Bangkwang Prison) where one has to choose between the Triad and the Yakuza factions. In the episode “Great Space Roaster” from American Dad!, Roger is placed by Stan in Bang Kwang. His prison cell is placed deep underwater and surrounded by mines. However, Roger eventually escapes on a raft made out of the guards. …http://booksllc.net/?l=de

Entity: Five Centuries of Secret Vatican Espionage

Entity: Five Centuries of Secret Vatican Espionage

$5.95

The International Bestseller“A true story that surpasses any novel by John le Carré.”—El País (Spain)For five centuries, the Vatican—the oldest organization in the world, maker of kings and shaper of history—has used a secret spy service, called the Holy Alliance, or later, the Entity, to carry out its will. Forty popes have relied on it to carry out their policies. They have played a hitherto invisible role confronting de-Christianizations and schisms, revolutions and dictators, colonizations and expulsions, persecutions and attacks, civil wars and world wars, assassinations and kidnappings. For the first time in English (following the bestselling Spanish and French editions), Eric Frattini tells the comprehensive tale of this sacred secret service. The Entity has been involved in the killings of monarchs, poisonings of diplomats, financing of South American dictators, protection of war criminals, laundering of Mafia money, manipulation of financial markets, provocation of bank failures, and financing of arms sales to combatants even as their wars were condemned, all in the name of God. The contradiction between God’s justice and Earth’s justice, Christian beliefs and Christian power all fall before the motto of the Entity: With the Cross and the Sword.

By tending their and their friends’ gardens, the Facebook users are able to raise money for Nature Conservancy to save the rain forest. In September 2008 it was rated as the number one application on Facebook ahead of Texas HoldEm Poker . In April 2009 it had slid to a sixth ranking. Popularity and claims of area of rain forest saved In the first quarter of 2008 (lil) Green Patch users raised over $15,000 in donations which was enough to save more than 13,600,000 square feet (1.26 km ) of rainforest. The application was then among the 15 most popular Facebook applications with 350,000 active users. In June, 2008 it was one of the top ten most installed applications with more than 5,217,180 installations and 521,718 active users a day. By October 2008, the app had raised $91,000 for the Nature Conservancy, though it has been pointed out that this amounts to pennies per active user. In December 2008 the number of users was reported at 6.3 million and the application was ranked as one of the five most popular Facebook applications. The area of Costa Rican rain forest that had been saved at that time was up to 70 million square feet. However, there has been no confirmation of any of these claims. There is no public accounting of money raised, where the foundation is, or how the money has been spent. (lil) Green Patch has been described as the “granddaddy of green Facebook apps” and has inspired many other similar applications. See also

 Notes for a War Story

Notes for a War Story

The war arrived in our village on the 18th of January. Obviously there were other wars going on, but they didn t have anything to do with us. There were wars for blacks. Wars for Arabs. Wars for Slavs. Our war started on the 18th of January, and in a few days, everything had changed. So recounts Giuliano, a loner among outsiders, one of three young drifters caught up in the whirlwind of a war in the Balkans. The three boys are like passing shadows; they live in abandoned houses, dodge the occasional bomb, and steal car parts for money. Meeting Felix a powerful, fast-talking mercenary changes everything for them. Felix is an expert manipulator; he speaks to their ambition and to their desires for power, wealth, and purpose. They’re instantly hooked, especially the trio’s unofficial leader, Stefano, and they soon escalate from petty crime to working on behalf of a mafia-style militia, bullying and extorting money in Felix’s name. But as Giuliano comes to realize, they don’t know what they’re fighting for if they’re even fighting for anything. Notes for a War Story is an astonishing look at life in a lawless, war-torn nation, heightened by the harsh, moving, pencil and watercolor artwork of Italy’s best graphic novel author.

From the freewheeling rush of hijacking trucks to the brutal race wars that marked his decade-long stint in jail, former Mafia insider Louis Ferrante describes his remarkable journey from rising mobster to federal prison inmate to full-time writer. As Louis Ferrante tells it, the bottom line was money—and his word was good. During his teenage years, Ferrante and his crew members hijacked delivery trucks and drove them to drop-offs all over New York, reselling the merchandise and pocketing thousands of dollars per load. For a seventeen-year-old who liked fist fighting and fast cars, it was the quickest money on the street, and it soon earned Ferrante the attention of the infamous Gambino crime family, led by late Mob boss John Gotti. In the early nineties, Ferrante’s growing Mafia connections enabled him to pull off some of the most lucrative heists in American history—all by the age of twenty-one.But the same handshakes that once sealed deals soon could no longer be trusted, and the betrayal by several of his close friends brought the feds banging down Ferrante’s door. Symptomatic of the nation’s larger crackdown on organized crime, indictments came from the Secret Service, the Nassau County Organized Crime Force, and the FBI. By 1994, Ferrante faced a life sentence in prison. He pleaded guilty and would serve nearly a decade in some of the most notorious penitentiaries in America. With raucous violence teeming around him, Ferrante relied on his Mob connections and street smarts to keep him alive—until an unexpected exchange with a guard propelled him to a painful self-reckoning: Who am I? What is it that makes me this way? Do I have a purpose?Desperate to escape from his bleak surroundings, Ferrante immersed himself in the study of history and literature. Over the term of his incarceration, each book became a much-needed sanctuary from the brutal chaos of his everyday existence, each page a challenge to his rapidly
